May 9 - back to Antananarivo

A rainy start to the day in Andasibe but dry by the time we were back at Tana.

Our main guide and driver continued south to Toliara, but we joined a different guide and driver for an afternoon to Ambohimanga, a fortified royal city on a hilltop east of Tana with residences and burial sites of royalty  in the 19th century. It is a UNESCO world heritage site as symbolic of the cultural identity of the Malagasy people.

The stone is considered sacred for the sacrifice of
zebu in the presence of the queen

The hill has a commanding view over the countryside...

rice paddies - this one seen to be in the shape of Madagascar
We stayed overnight Tana and caught an afternoon flight to Toliara, thereby avoiding what would have been a long road trip - we'll see that road later on bikes.
Most things in Antananarivo move on human power
Many taxis are now-dated Deux-Chevaus
Food... we tried eel a couple of days ago... it was quite good... here is one being sold roadside...
...and there are lots of butcher stalls in the local markets and along town streets...

10 May... flight to Toliara gave us an aerial view of Antananarivo...

Coleague and Tiana had had a long drive and were there at the Toliara airport to meet us. We are very pleased with them - they are really looking after us.
